"The name Royapuram is derived from the Tamil appellation for St. Peter, "Royappa," in connection with St. Peter's Church located in the area.
This connection stems from a group of Christian fishermen who migrated to the region in the early 19th century and built a church dedicated to St. Peter, who was known as "Rayappar" in the Tamil Bible.
Over time, the place came to be known as Rayapparpuram, then Rayapuram, and eventually Royapuram.
An alternative origin suggests the name comes from "Rayar Kings," who ruled parts of South India, and the locality was originally called Rayarapuram.
It is also believed that the British and Anglo-Indian settlers who lived in the area were referred to as "Rayars," which contributed to the name Rayarpuram.
The area was historically known as Rayarpuram before evolving into Royapuram."
